Spring can be one of the most beautiful times of the year – but seasonal allergies can make it miserable.

For many people, spring means having symptoms like sneezing, itchy or watery eyes, nasal or head congestion, and more.

In this blog post, I’ll share how homeopathy approaches seasonal allergies and some options that may help you find relief in the meantime.

Why Seasonal Allergies Often Return Every Year

Most conventional allergy treatments focus on suppressing symptoms. Antihistamines and nasal sprays may provide temporary relief, but many people find themselves relying on them every allergy season.

From a homeopathic perspective, recurring allergies indicate a deeper pattern in the body. Conditions that continue longer than a few weeks, or return year after year, are considered to be chronic, and seasonal allergies fall into this category.

This means that while using certain homeopathic remedies at home can help relieve symptoms during allergy season, deeper and more lasting relief often requires individualized chronic care with a homeopath, however there are still several ways that homeopathy (and other modalities) can help manage symptoms during allergy season until you seek chronic care.

I know this from firsthand experience. I’ve experienced seasonal allergies for much of my life and discovering homeopathy has changed the way I approach allergy season. I personally used many of the methods listed in this blog post and in my Homeopathy for Seasonal Allergies Guide.

Examples of Homeopathic Remedies Used for Seasonal Allergies

There are several homeopathic remedies that can be used for seasonal allergies, however it is important to note that homeopathic remedies are chosen based on individual and characteristic symptoms that a person experiences. You’ll want to look for unique symptoms by asking questions such as:

  • Is the nasal discharge irritating or mild?

  • Is there a lot of eye watering and itching? If so, what makes those symptoms worse?

  • What color are any discharges?

  • Do symptoms worsen at certain times of day?

These types of questions will always help when it comes to choosing a remedy. Also remember that two people with seasonal allergies may need completely different remedies depending on their symptom picture.

Some common homeopathic remedies that can be used for seasonal allergies are:

Allium cepa

Often considered when there is frequent sneezing with clear, runny nasal discharge that irritates the nose or upper lip. The eyes may water, but the tears are usually less irritating than the nasal discharge. The person needing Allium Cepa may also have a tingling or itching sensation in the throat or nostrils.

Symptoms are often worse indoors and in warm rooms and may improve in open air.

Euphrasia

Itchy, irritated, and swollen eyes with profuse watery discharge that burns. Inflammation of the nasal mucus membranes with a runny nose, but with a bland (non-irritating) discharge. Symptoms are often worse during the day, from warmth, and from light.

Natrum muriaticum

This is a good remedy to consider where there is watery discharge from the nose that may have an egg white like appearance. Watery eyes that are worse from wind or reading. Violent sneezing (typically worse during the early morning). The nose may also alternate between being runny and stuffy, and there may be tickling in the throat along with a cough.

Sabadilla

Long, sudden attacks of violent sneezing. Tingling and itching in the nose with thin, often irritating nasal discharge. Headache at the front of the head/sinuses, possibly with red, irritated watery eyes. There may be a feeling of a lump in the throat that causes swallowing. Worse for cold, cold drinks. Better with warm food and drink, being wrapped up.

Wyethia

Sometimes helpful when there is intense itching in the roof of the mouth or behind the nose, creating an urge to rub the tongue against the palate. This intense itching sometimes extends into the throat and ears. There may also be constant throat clearing and a dry hacking cough. The throat may feel dry, swollen, and have difficult swallowing.

These are only a few examples. The best remedy depends on the specific symptoms a person is experiencing.

Combination Homeopathic Remedies

Combination homeopathic remedies are becoming increasingly popular, and if you are not sure about selecting a single remedy, these might be a good option for you, however combination remedies can have their drawbacks, so it is important to know what to look out for. Combination remedies are products such as:

Examples include:

  • Allergena

  • TexaClear

  • Boiron AllergyCalm

  • Hyland’s Seasonal Allergy Relief

These products are combination remedies because they contain several homeopathic remedies into one product and are designed to target common allergy symptoms. The remedy you need may or may not be in this mix. They are not based on individualization, however, which means there is always a possibility of developing proving symptoms. Combination remedies may not work as specifically as single remedies; however, they can sometimes provide temporary relief.

It is also important to communicate any homeopathic remedies you are using with a homeopath, if you are seeing one.

Once I started chronic care, I was able to stop using single and combination homeopathic remedies for my allergies, however I would still occasionally use other things to support my body such as:

Vitamin C

Vitamin C has been studied for its potential role in reducing histamine levels and supporting the body during allergic reactions. I have personally used high doses of vitamin c for several years and I don't know how I would have gotten through without it.

Sources and studies that support vitamin c use:

Exercise

Since incorporating a few minutes (10 or so) of moderate exercise per day, I noticed my nasal allergy symptoms significantly improved, so I decided to do a little research into this. There is scientific evidence that exercise reduces allergic rhinitis in patients.

A Few Things to Know When Using Homeopathic Remedies

If you are trying homeopathy for seasonal allergies, a few general guidelines include:

  • Lower potencies such as 6C, 12C, or 30C are commonly used for acute symptoms.

  • If a remedy improves your symptoms, it is usually best to stop taking it and only repeat the dose if symptoms return.

  • Homeopathic remedies can often be used alongside other medications, though it is always best to consult your healthcare provider if you have questions.
