Urtica Urens is made from stinging nettles. If you've ever brushed against stinging nettles, you know exactly what this remedy picture feels like.
Think Urtica Urens when you see:
Intensely itchy, burning, raised red rash or hives
Blotchy red rash with a burning, stinging quality
Very hot and itchy bites
Worse from water, cool moist air, and touch
If the reaction looks and feels like stinging nettles - burning, raised, blotchy, intensely itchy - consider Urtica Urens.
A Note on Choosing the Right Remedy
As you read through these, you probably noticed that several of them share symptoms: redness, itching, swelling. That's normal, and it's exactly why paying attention to the specific details matters so much.Is the bite hot or cold to the touch? Does heat make it better or worse? Is the itch moving around or staying in one place? Is there swelling, blistering, or a raised rash?
Those details are what point you to the right remedy.
Another tip: In first aid situations, it's common to start off using one remedy and then change remedies as you progress through the healing. As always, just match your individual symptoms with a remedy.

Summer is here - which usually means the bugs are back and we are spending more time outdoors. This usually comes with a few bites and stings. Whether you're dealing with a mosquito bite that won't stop itching, a bee sting that's swelling up fast, or a bite from something you never even saw... having a few homeopathic remedies on hand can make a big difference.
But before we dive in, one important reminder: in homeopathy, the remedy has to match your symptoms - not just the situation. Two people can get bitten by the same mosquito and need completely different remedies based on how their body is responding. It's a common misconception that any puncture wound needs ledum. While this is often a good starting point, using a remedy for a certain situation can have it's pitfalls... and that is, at some point, it won't work, and this is likely because the remedy has to match symptoms, not a condition.
With that in mind, here are the top 6 homeopathic remedies to have in your summer kit - and how to know which one you actually need.
Bonus tip: Each remedy has a graphic that can be saved to your phone (you should be able to long click on each one and save them) for quick reference when you need it! I like to create a photo album specifically for homeopathic remedies, so they're easy to locate when you need them.
1. Apis Mellifica
Apis is made from the honeybee and it is one of the first remedies to think of when a bite or sting looks and feels like a typical bee sting, even if it wasn't one. Remember: it could also be that you have a bee sting but it doesn't feel like the typical Apis symptomology... if that's the case, consider other remedies.
Think of Apis when you see:
Hot, red, swollen areas at the site of the bite
Swelling that spreads beyond the bite itself
Hives that develop after a sting or bite
Worse from applied heat
Better from cold applications
If the bite is puffy, angry, and hot - and cold makes it feel better - consider Apis.
2. Belladonna

Belladonna and Apis can look similar at first glance: both have redness, swelling, and heat. But there are key differences that will help you tell them apart.
Think Belladonna when you see:
Dry and hot skin
Red, swollen, and shiny appearance
Throbbing or intensely itchy sensation
Worse from touch and warmth
Better from cold
The distinguishing feature between Apis and Belladonna is often the throbbing quality and the shiny appearance of the skin with Belladonna. Apis tends to be more about swelling and puffiness, while Belladonna has more of that intense, dry, throbbing heat. This is called differentiating a remedy, which can be very helpful when you are trying to decide between two remedies that have similar symptom presentation.
3. Ledum Palustre

Ledum is a remedy that gets recommended a lot for bug bites - but often for the wrong reason. You'll frequently see it suggested for any puncture wound, including bug bites. While this can work for a lot of people and situations, if it doesn't, then you'll need to look at your symptoms.
Think Ledum when you see:
The bitten area feels cold or neutral to the touch, not warm/hot
The person doesn't the injured part to be covered
Better from cold applications
Worse at night and worse from heat
If the bite feels cold rather than hot, and cold applications bring relief - then that's your Ledum picture. If the bite is hot and swollen, you'll likely want to consider Apis or Belladonna.
4. Rhus Toxicodendron

Rhus Tox is a remedy most people associate with poison ivy, and for a good reason. But it can also be helpful for bug bites and other rashes when the symptom picture matches.
Think Rhus Tox when you see:
Blistering rash that burns and itches intensely
Rash with rheumatic pain (joint stiffness or achiness alongside the skin reaction)
Worse from cold and rest
Better from warmth, movement, rubbing (or maybe stretching), and changing positions
The chilliness, restlessness and the relief from movement are keynote symptoms of Rhus Tox. If someone can't stop moving or rubbing the affected area and warmth makes it feel better - think Rhus Tox.
5. Staphysagria

Staphysagria is a lesser known remedy for bug bites but a really useful one, especially for people who seem to attract mosquitoes more than others, or whose bites linger and itch intensely.
Think Staphysagria when you see:
Intense itching at the site of the bite
Stinging sensation
Scratching changes the location of the itch - it moves rather than resolving
Worse from touching the bite
Better from warmth
That moving itch is a key characteristic of Staphysagria. If scratching one spot just makes another spot itch, that's a characteristic symptom of Staphysagria.
6. Urtica Urens
